About Merry Nell

Merry Nell Colborn Fullmer

Born and raised in Santa Paula, California, into a family of artistic and creative people, my exposure to artistic expression was a normal part of life. I always knew there was a deep passion inside myself that I could someday express.

My father was a talented craftsman and tile mosaic artist; mother and grandmother painters and could sew and knit anything; Uncle Richard became a sculptor after retirement; brothers Jake and Doug are woodworkers. College education focused on the sciences, yet I took art classes when I could, and was always busy creating and admiring art.

Fifteen years ago, I inherited an old kiln and began experimenting with glass fusing. Since then I have played with flameworking as well. Glass is a most intriguing medium which transforms from sharp and dangerous into smooth and soothing. Glass dances with light in mysterious ways to alter images and sensation.

Through the most fortunate experiences I met up with an artist who speaks a language that I understand clearly and resonates with the deep passion inside me needing to be heard. Narcissus Quagliata began teaching masterclasses in “Painting with Glass,” his unique techniques 2 years ago. I am privileged to be a member of his maiden masterclass series.

My studies have uncovered a love for connecting deep meaning through glass portraits. Although I know there is much more to learn and look forward to the journey, I am grateful for the opportunity to create and share deeply with others through glass art currently.
